Strong Start^®

Strong Start ^® began in 2001 when Lyle asked if there was a volunteer program available that could help young children learn how to read. Strong Start® began in just one school in the Waterloo Region, and has since grown to include 120 of the Region’s schools.

Lyle knew that by ensuring young children are given the best possible resources and education, the community stands to benefit in the long run. Lyle also knew that when it comes to maintaining economic growth and ensuring a high quality of life within a community, the success lies in the literacy of the population.

To this day, Lyle’s vision for a volunteer-driven program continues to grow and aid in the development of reading skills in young children in the Waterloo Region. Generous financial contributions and hundreds of volunteers keep the program running. Together, they provide a wonderful example of a community effort that promotes literacy.
